A necessity to protect your skin from damaging UVA or UVB radiation. Using sun protection decreases your chances for sunburn and can prevent malignant melanoma or skin cancer. Too much sun can cause lines, wrinkles, and unwanted pigmentation.
Traditional sun protection comes in two forms, chemical filters and mineral filters.
The most common sunscreens on the market contain chemical filters. These are usually a combination of multiple types of chemical ingredients such as: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. These chemicals don’t just sit at the skin’s surface, they penetrate through the layers of skin and leave deposits on tissue and have been found in urine and even in your PLASMA!
What does that mean for us?
From studies conducted all over the world (see references below), researchers have discovered that these chemicals can product skin reactions and allergies, are hormone disrupting, affect the thyroid, increase behavioral issues, and can negatively impact both male and female reproductive systems asl well as causing an increase of human breast cancer cells. Many of these can react with the sun’s rays to create damaging free radicals, which may actually increase the risk of skin cancer. Mothers with high levels of oxybenzone in their bodies are more likely to give both to underweight baby girls, which has been linked to coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and other adulthood diseases. The US Center for Disease Control found that 97% of Americans have oxybenzone in their blood, and these same chemicals can be found in mothers milk – so even if you don’t put these chemicals on your infant’s skin, if you put it on YOUR skin and breastfeed, your child is ingesting the chemicals; impacting their hormone production from very early on!
You may feel that staying completely out of the sun is the best option to avoid these chemicals. Unfortunately, we are then at risk for low vitamin D levels that have been linked to heart disease, increased risk of heart attacks, and increased Depression.
Does it feel like you can’t win?
There’s another option.
Our sun protection products are our Daily Protection and Beach Butter! These products are mineral filters that act as barriers, which sit on top of the skin and is effective against UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. A “nano particle” will enter the blood stream, whereas a “non-nano” will not. Our products contain:
Non-nano zinc oxide, which scatters, absorbs, and reflects UV radiation, coconut oil, which blocks about 75% of UV radiation
Olive Oil, which has been proven to reactivate CB-1 expression, normalizing the receptor level to protect cells against cancer
Hemp, which has an SPF rating of 6
Shea butter, which has an SPF rating of 6-10
Plus they smell AMAZING!
Most experts conclude that more sensitive tests are needed to determine whether sunscreen chemical ingredients pose risks to frequent users as most haven’t been fully tested on humans for safety. In the end, it’s up to YOU to do your own research about what you put on your and your family’s skin.
